Chia seeds are among the healthiest foods on the planet. They are loaded with nutrients that can have important benefits for your body and brain. They are prized for their ability to provide sustainable energy; in fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength”. Chia seed is high in fatty acids, fiber, protein, and various micronutrients. They can also help in reducing appetite and weight.
They are typically well tolerated by most people, but if you are not used to eating a lot of fiber there is a possibility of digestive side effects if you eat too much of it. We recommend you consume about 1.5 tablespoons of chia seeds, twice per day.
The seeds themselves taste rather bland, so you can add them to pretty much anything. They can be eaten raw, soaked in juice, added to porridge, pudding, smoothies or added to baked goods. You can also sprinkle them on top of cereal, yogurt, vegetables or rice dishes. Because of their ability to absorb both water and fat, they can be used to thicken sauces. Adding chia seeds to recipes will dramatically boost their nutritional value.
Chia seeds have important benefits for your body and brain. They are rich in polyunsaturated fat, as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. They are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body.
Chia seeds are a highly versatile ingredient. They have little if any distinctive flavor, so they don’t compete with other flavors in a dish. They also soften in the presence of liquid.
The year we started producing superfoods, we founded Happy Little Faces, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for impoverished children in our local community of Lima, Peru. In 2010, we built a kindergarten from scratch, providing free education, lunches, and extra-curricular activities for local children who would otherwise not have these opportunities.
We are proud to say that our initiative has grown successfully in Lima. We thank you for being a large part of our growth as an organization, and for helping the local communities of Peru.
